Sea Kayak Adventures far off the Beaten Path

"Many thanks to you for opening the door to the incredible world of sea kayaking."
-N. Barnett, Anchorage, Alaska

"Sitting, contemplatively for hours in the kayak, watching seals and calving glaciers certainly was a sublime experience. The solitude; the landscape; the constant hum of falling water pierced by the thunder of a calving glacier; the sight of a wolverine, a sea otter, a land otter, the birds, the jellyfish (what color!); it all blends in my mind as something I WILL do again."
-K. Keith, Texas

Equinox Wilderness Expeditions offers Alaska sea kayaking trips that take you to a few of the most spectacular and remote glacial fjords in North America. These fjords are out of reach of cruise ships, with few or no signs of humans. We access these areas by bush floatplane, so we cannot carry hardshell kayaks. We travel like the ancient Eskimos and Aleuts, but using modern materials, paddling "skin" boats--one and two-person folding kayaks, made by in Germany by Klepper and in Canada by Feathercraft. These watercraft are both stable and seaworthy. Where boat access is possible, we can use fiberglass hardshells. We can set up custom itineraries anywhere in Prince William Sound, Bering Glacier, Kenai Fjords, LeConte Glacier, and the Outer Coast of Glacier Bay.

Our Alaska trips are for adventurers who want to explore the interface between the Ice Age and the rainforest, with all the wonderful wildlife that lives in these ecosystems. On any of our sea kayaking trips, we may see whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions, and an abundance of waterfowl. Depending upon our location and the group's interest, we may move every day, or we will take the luxury of setting up camp only two or three times throughout the trip, paddling every day out of a base camp. We typically paddle 4-6 hours a day. Prior experience is not necessary; our experienced guides will teach you the skills that you'll need for this wilderness adventure, including the fine art of packing a sea kayak. Check out the trip descriptions and itineraries for our Icy Bay, Bering Glacier, and Hubbard Glacier trips.

In Fall and Spring, we travel to Baja, Mexico, to explore islands in the Sea of Cortez. We use sturdy fiberglass kayaks for the warm-weather getaways. See our Baja Sea Kayaking trip page for more details.

This spring we offer a kayak trip on the waters of Lake Powell in Arizona. We explore amphitheaters, labyrinthine canyons, and secret coves uncovered with the receding waters of Lake Powell. Read more about this quiet exploration of the Southwest.
